Patient Care Staff & Physicians
Parker Hughes Cancer Center is staffed by some of the finest doctors, scientists, and nurses in the field. These professionals come from a variety of organizations, states, and countries to work together to provide the best treatment available. Each staff member comes to Parker Hughes Cancer Center with a personal committment to each patient and a belief that by tailoring treatment for the individual they can ensure the best possible outcome.
The staff includes physicians with specialties in pediatric and adult oncology, surgery, general pediatrics and internal medicine. They work with a staff of nurses specially trained in oncology. In addition to the professionals involved in direct patient care, the Parker Hughes Cancer Center staff includes pharmacists, laboratory technicians, medical records staff, patient care coordinators, social workers and all necessary support staff.
Fatih M. Uckun, M.D., Ph.D.
The staff works under the direction and guidance of Fatih M. Uckun, M.D., Ph.D., Medical Director. Dr. Uckun is a leading researcher in new drug development for cancer and is most noted for the development of several new agents for the treatment of childhood leukemias.
Dr. Uckun completed his medical training in Heidelberg, Germany. Following his post-doctoral fellowship training in Adult Hematology and Oncology at
the University of Heidelberg, he joined University of Minnesota where he also completed a residency training in Pediatrics, and fellowship training in Hematology/Oncology/BMT. He joined the University of Minnesota faculty in 1986 as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 1989 and Full Professor in 1992. He was named the first Holder of the Hughes Endowed Chair in Biotherapy at the University of Minnesota in 1995.
He was the Director of the Biotherapy Institute at the University of Minnesota before he joined the Parker Hughes Institute as the Institute's President and Director. His pioneering research is well-recognized by many honors and awards including the endowed Hughes Chair in Oncology, Stohlman Scholar Award of the Leukemia Society of America and election to the American Society for Clinical Investigation.
